Hey Guys !!!!!! Want to work and get the experience right from the first year? Then surely this article will help you. I will be telling my personal experience on how I got my first internship not very early but in the last year of graduation. As well I will be giving details about the application process.
As we all know that the COVID-19 situation is becoming worst and we all are stuck at home due to lockdown, I thought of using this time to do something fruitful. I was wondering about how can I make the time productive? I came across INTERNSHALA.
We can say that INTERNSHALA is Doremon's Pocket! There are abundant opportunities. Right from internships to online training and contests.
And the best part is that these internships are available for people covering all profiles, for school students to post-graduate students, across various regions, and offered by various industrial organizations.
So let me explain the Importance of Internship in building your career :
· Opportunity to apply your knowledge to real projects: You get a chance to apply your theoretical and academic knowledge to real-world projects.
· Gain Industrial Experience: You get the chance to gain Industrial experience and expose yourself to operations of the professional world.
· Builds your Resume: Internships acts as a cherry on the cake for building your resume.
· Builds Professional Network: You get in contact with the industrial people and there is a chance of you to get hired for a full-time job.
There are many more advantages of Internships.
So coming back to point, I registered to Internshala in March 2020. After registration, I next step is to build your resume. I added my academic information also mentioned my skills. I also mentioned my achievements and links to my projects. It would be great if you have your portfolio. Then I selected the category of internship and started applying for internships.
On Internshala there are three categories of internships based time and place:
1. Full-Time Internships: In this category, interns need to go to the office and work for 8 to 9 hours. These are also known as In-office internships. They are typically in summer vacations.
2. Part-Time Internships: In this category, interns need to work for 10-12 hours /week. These kinds of internships are suitable for college-going students.
3. Work From Home Internships( Virtual Internship): In this category, interns need to work for 2 to 3 hours daily from home.
I choose to go with a work-from-home internship. Firstly they ask us the question why should we hire you?
You need to answer this question very wisely as it is your first impression on the recruiter. Your recruiter will judge you based on this answer.
Tips to answer :
1. Give all details about your skills
2. See the requirements of internship and highlight your skills which exactly matches their requirements
3. Use precise sentences
4. Keep your language polite
5. Mention the experience you have on working with any technology
6. Let them know how suitable you are for the role
Example:
Web Developer
I have good working experience in developing websites and web applications using Javascript, HTML, CSS, Bootstrap. I also have also worked with
React. Js and familiar with using Angular.js. I have developed web site XYZ using React.js and API using ABC. Secondly, I am a dedicated problem solver, a quick learner, and a very good team player always encouraging the teammates. And a very keen learner of different technologies, and always happy to explore man.
After this, The question would be Are You available for the time period? You need to mention your availability.
Further, they may ask you to submit links to the project. Thus you can submit your application in this way.
After that, if the recruiter likes your application and finds you suitable for the role, he will get in touch with you. He may ask you to do some tasks.
What you need to have while getting the first internship is lots of patience. You might get rejected at first, but you should keep trying and improving your skillset.
Unfortunately, I didn't get a call from a single recruiter from the 10 internships to which I applied previously. But I didn't give up. I kept on applying for more internships. I upgraded my profile and my skill-set by gaining online certificates.
Finally, I got a call from 4 recruiters.
I was asked to complete the task by two of those recruiters. I was asked to build an API. I was able to complete one of them. I submitted the task. He appreciated my work and I was hired for an internship.
In Conclusion, I would like to say that while applying for an internship you must take care of your resume. You must clearly mention your achievements because it really matters a lot. And keep upgrading your skill-set.
It will be the best thing if you have your portfolio.
And essentially DON'T GIVE UP! Figure out what is wrong or what you are lacking in. Keep Learning.
